Declaration from the Africa 2 Conference

The Africa 2 Forest Producer organisation conference in Tanzania 28-19 September 2017 approved a declaration by acclamation.

The declaration contains commitments by the participants and their call for action from governments and international partner organisations.

    In the declaration the participants recognised the importance of forest and farm producer organisation and secure land tenure, freedom of association and legal recognition.

    The participants underlined that climate change threatens lives and the importance of farm and forest mitigation and adaption functions.

    The participants committed to expand membership, strengthen capacity and include women, youth and indigenous peoples.

    They called upon governments to recognise the importance of financing, reduce legal barriers and strengthen land tenure legislation.

    The called upon regional and global partner organisations to strengthen national, regional and global cooperation and to meet again in a similar Africa context in 2-3 years.

    Few forest discussions at UNFCCC COP 23 in Bonn

    At the COP 23 very little of substance on forests was discussed at the main negotiations. The task of implementing the Paris Accord become an administrative debate on the REDD instrument. The issue was whether a special institutional arrangement was needed within the convention or not. No consensus was established.
