Committed to international communication

IFFA is committed to the development and implementation of international communication strategies.

This was the main message when IFFA chair Peter deMarsh addressed the United Nations Forum on forests. The 13th session of the forum was held in New York 7 to 11 May 2018.

In the local election in Nepal 35 representatives of AFFON, the Nepalese member of IFFA, has been elected. More than half of them are women.

Few forest discussions at UNFCCC COP 23 in Bonn

At the COP 23 very little of substance on forests was discussed at the main negotiations. The task of implementing the Paris Accord become an administrative debate on the REDD instrument. The issue was whether a special institutional arrangement was needed within the convention or not. No consensus was established.

As part of the European Forest Week 9-13 October 2017, under the theme of "Forests, our common good” IFFA was invited to speak on a Side-Event arranged by Forest and Farm Facility and FAO.

Committee on Food Security CFS with IFFA

IFFA was present at the Committee  onFood and Secuirity. IFFA participated in a panel discussion on Feminism, Forests and Food Security and Women’s Important Role in the Development of Sustainable Management of the Forest Landscape, as well as the Importance of Forests for Food Supply Globally on October 9th at FAO in Rome.

IFFA Participated in two RRI events in October. IFFA participated at the Rights and Resources conference “Reducing Unequally in a Turbulent World and RRI Global Scan.

IFFA was present at the PEFC 2017 stakeholder dialogue in Helsinki 16 December 2017. IFFA representatives participated in different events during the certification week. IFFA represented family forestry, community forestry and indigenous peoples. IFFA Board member Pentti Linnamaa reported IFFA from the stakeholder dialogue.

Fourth IFFA Forest Producer conference Successful

The Fourth Forest and farm producer organisation conference was organised by IFFA in Tanzania 28-29 September 2017. In the series of forest producer organisation conferences this was a follow up of the IFFA Americas’ in Mexico 2014, Africas’ in Kenya 2015, Asians’ in Thailand 2016 and now this 2nd Africas’ in Tanzania 2017.

Sustainable forestry at home and abroad – Norwegian case

Forestry and forest based industry is important to Norway. Both Norwegian authorities, forest owners and the industry are committed to manage the forests sustainably. Forest owners, through their cooperatives, have taken the initiative to voluntary conservation, certification and sustainable management of the forests.

Family Forestry Facts

Family forestry is forest tenure and activities by persons with ownership or tenure rights to forest land. Persons owning or managing forests often include the whole family in the activities and the forest land goes from one generation to the next.

Forest producers call and strategy

-Governments must provide financing, reduce legal barriers, recognise legal rights, improve land tenure, promote education and fairly implement laws in due consideration of local people.

Asia forest producer strategy

-Recognise the key role of forest and farm producer organisations, secure land tenure, climate change threat, empowering small holder organisations and partnerships with government and international donors.

IFFA work on global forest indicators

IFFA will participate in a meeting for developing global forest indicators. The indicators will be used in implementing sustainable development goals.
